New England Regional Muslim Cemetary in Canterbury

There has been a lot of rumor about this project as of late.  I’m posting what I have here to start the discussion.

  1. WOW…this has been up for 3 days, and not one comment?

I can tell you my observations and misgivings about this project from just the first IWWC meeting.

There is a proposal to run a seperate road from the current deeded access, and to make 3 wetland crossings to access the interior of the property. Only two of the crossings are required for the cemetery. The 3rd is for future access.

My concern is that once the crossings are approved, then the 3rd area will either be used for other purposes than those associated with the cemetery, or will eventually be used to run a through-road to Baldwin Brook road.

That accomplished, the group would now have the road frontage needed for a subdivision, and the road would be deeded to the town with all that goes with it.

Additionally, the area where the access road is proposed has a horrible sight-line, being at the base of a sharp hill going into Lisbon. This is a dangerous spot ALREADY, and the addition of a road to be used for funeral processions will be a nightmare for traffic control.

People already cruise through this area at high speed, and getting out of driveways a full 2/10th of a mile up the road can be challenging.

Lastly, I understand that notices to abbutting property owners were sent out, giving the date of the public hearing as this past week, rather than the date set at the wetlands meeting of Jan. 27th.

Quite a typo, and I hope, the notices will be resent in time for the ACTUAL meeting so that abbutters can attend if they so choose.

I would say that the petitioners have gotten off to a rocky start.

  2. Comments are on the forum Lou You make some excellent points. Not knowing the area I was not thinking “does it fit” I do hope the boards find that it doesn’t fit and strike it down. I also hope that members of the board that strike it down are smart enough NOT to make any comments about religion. They’ll be in court. Ya might want to mention that to any boards members that you know. Ya never know what members will say in public and end up with a big OOPS!!!

  3. Figures…everytime I just get comfortable with the format, Rich brings it to a new level!

This really isn’t about religion, but about where a facility like this should be developed. There are surrounding residences which would be adversely effected by the increases in traffic, and other activities, as well as a decline in property value. I am also concerned with wetland degredation, if and when the original driveway crossings become a fully developed town road.

  4. Yeah well he tries :-)

It is about religion to some. Can’t be when your a board member. But if religion is mentioned at all, that is an opening for a lawsuit by the developer. And they will do it. That’s all I’m saying. From what you described the area should be given a very close look. The wetlands, sight line, traffic etc and what the extension of that road will bring to the area.

  5. But let’s face it Lou, these days one just mentions Muslim/Arabic/Mideast and people get an uneasy feeling. It’s only natural! As long as they are law abiding American citizen they should enjoy the same rights as you and I of course. Count me as uneasy and skeptical.

Thousands of bodies buried 4′ in the ground in pine boxes 500′ from your water supply! No embalming, no crypt just a pine box.

3 wetlands crossings for just the road……I have MANY examples where that has be a MAJOR issue for IWWC in the past. I would say odds are it won’t fly this time around either.

Much higher traffic for a road that’s already falling apart because there is too much traffic at too high a speed.

Sight lines will be way to low at the speeds traveled on this road.

  7. The people of Canterbury need to be informed on this asap. They had better do some quick homework about future demands from the Muslim community….

No doubt that property values will be worth almost nothing. (That goes for all over Canterbury, not only on Lisbon Road) I’d be darned if I’d want to purchase a home anywhere near this place and I’m sure the hell not the only one who feels this way.
I wonder how the Lisbon area feels about this.

  8. In doing a bit more research, sunnah burial is done without embalming and requires one to be buried in a wooden casket. This in itself raises some questions. First is there any danger to groundwater contamination by this type of burial? I think the Inland Wetlands and Waterways Commission needs to look into this. I would propose a study be done.

Secondly the Hadeeth says ” The dead should be buried in the same area where they died. Transporting the body to another area or another country is not permissible if it will unnecessarily delay the burial or cause financial or other hardship. ” So why the insistence of coming to another community way out in the woods to purchase a cemetery?

Non Muslims are also not permitted in Muslim cemeteries. Convenient if you had plans for the area other than just a cemetery. I gethered this info from a link on one of the ccm-inc.org website which brought me to http://muttaqun.com/funerals.html. I might add that quite a bit of info is provided about martyrs.

  9. Ray Sulich says:

The CCM director said today when asked about the graveyard lowering property values, nobody lives here now and when they (Muslims) start moving in the property values will go up!

How do current Canterbury residents feel about be “nobody” when it comes to the current make up of the town?

    9
  10. Whose going to pay for all the additions they will demand in our town and schools? The people of Canterbury had better think about this and they better realize that their property valuse WILL decrease….the Town should be ready to be collecting less in tax revenue and paying more in services. Same goes for Lisbon. What about traffic congestion? Who’s going to pay wear and tear of the roads? The residents of Canterbury and Lisbon? BTW, how come the sleazy left wing Bulletin has no mention of this? Covering for Brian Sear again? What does Sear have to say about this?
Who is giving donations for the purchase of this property, can we get that info? I wonder if CAIR is involved.

Lowball number (estimate), but still how are we to know, can we sit in on their “preachings” in a mosque in our small town? Could it be more than 10%, especially in out of the area places…..

here’s some interesting info about their burial practices…sounds real good for the enviorment. Who’s going to pay for ground water monitoring? How will we know if in fact they are following CT laws with their burials?

  11. Article finally made it in the Bulletin.

    http://www.norwichbulletin.com/communities/x349736970/Hearing-tonight-on-Muslim-cemetery-at-Canterbury-Lisbon-line

“Sear said he contacted the state Freedom of Information Commission about what to do if the fire code limit of 180 people in the community room is reached for the hearing.

“If a lot of people do show up, we’ll have to put it off because you can’t deny people access,” said John Tetreault, chairman of the Inland Wetlands Commission.

Tetreault said the only option for a large meeting, a gymnasium at one of the schools, is not available tonight. He said the meeting will need to be postponed until next week if too many people attend.”

It will be a good call if they decide to postpone this meeting. There is great interest in this with a growing number of people just now hearing about it.

“Abdul Hamid, head of the Hamden-based group, said Muslims have one 11-acre cemetery in Enfield, and it’s filling up. He said the proposed cemetery in Canterbury would have no buildings, and the rate of burial among Muslims in the area is about 25 plots per year.”

Yet, this is what they had to say about their Sterling Property.

    http://ccm-inc.org/cms2/index.php?page=sterling-graveyard-appeal

” The potential uses of these properties will challenge the imagination of Muslims, especially future generations. Presently 109 acres have 5 acres of picnic area, 35 acres of fenced camping area and the rest wooded land with trails and cabins to be used for hiking, camping and other uses. There is a 2-bedroom trailer and several cabins ready to be used.”

Much more needs to be shown about their true intentions for this property.

  12. There’s nothing RADICAL about radical Islam. It’s common, mainstream Islamic practice stupid (Sharia). Islam is the pagan “religion” of KILL THE KUFARS. That’s us people. You wonder why they don’t eat pig? That’s because they are PIGS! Save Israel, where Jesus spoke the true word of GOD 500 years before the PIG, Muhammad, showed up and started killing the “infidels” aka anyone who didn’t bow before him. Muhammad was the world’s first Jim Jones. It’s too bad he didn’t sever up some Cyanide to his CULT back in 540 ad. GOD help us all. Political Correctness is anything but correct.

2010.02.11 (Bannu, Pakistan) – Fifteen innocents are blown to bits in a double bombing by Islamic militants.
2010.02.10 (Khyber, Pakistan) – The Taliban murder a member of a rescue team.

2010.02.10 (Pattani, Thailand) – A Buddhist man at a bird singing competition is brutally gunned down by Muslim radicals.

  13. All I can say is IWWC better wake up and start questioning this applicant the same way they question others. I can’t believe a group would get a pass, or at least an easier way of it than applications submitted by current residents that would have a much lesser impact on wetlands than this project does! Wake up IWWC!
